How Upsell works

Learn how Upsell suggests monthly donation amounts and how to configure its eligibility, content, and presets.

Upsell encourages donors who select a one-time donation to consider making a smaller monthly donation instead.

Monthly donations provide your organization with reliable, predictable revenue, making it easier to plan ahead and grow. Even when the monthly amount is smaller, it can provide significantly more support over time than the donor’s original one-time donation.

How donors see Upsell

When an eligible donor continues after selecting a one-time donation, they’ll see an additional checkout tab called Become a monthly supporter.

This tab includes:

  • A custom title and description explaining the value of monthly support

  • A higher monthly donation option

  • A lower monthly donation option

  • The option to continue with their original one-time donation

Donors are always free to continue with the one-time amount they initially selected.

Enabling Upsell

Upsell is configured separately for each campaign:

  1. Open the campaign’s checkout settings.

  2. Open the Upsell drawer.

  3. Turn Upsell on.

  4. Configure the eligibility range and donor-facing content.

This allows you to use Upsell for general donation forms and long-term initiatives while leaving it disabled for campaigns where collecting the full one-time amount is more important.

Setting the eligible donation range

Use the Minimum amount and Maximum amount settings to control which one-time donations are eligible for Upsell.

For example, if the maximum is set to $1,000:

  • A donor giving $900 can be shown the Upsell.

  • A donor giving $1,000 or more will continue without seeing it.

The minimum amount works the same way at the lower end. It prevents Upsell from appearing when the original one-time donation is already too small to convert into a meaningful monthly amount.

Customizing the content

Use the following fields to explain why monthly support matters to your organization:

  • Title: A short, compelling invitation to become a monthly supporter.

  • Description: Additional context about the impact and value of recurring support.

How the monthly amounts are calculated

Double calculates two monthly suggestions based on the donor’s original one-time amount.

By default, the first suggestion is calculated by reducing the original amount by 70%. In other words, the suggested monthly amount starts at approximately 30% of the one-time donation.

For a $1,000 one-time donation:

  • Original amount: $1,000

  • First calculated monthly amount: approximately $300

The second suggestion starts 30% below the first option:

  • First monthly option: $300

  • Second calculated monthly amount: approximately $210

These percentages can be customized by contacting Double support.

How presets are used

Instead of always displaying automatically generated amounts, Double first looks for relevant amounts in your checkout’s monthly donation presets and items.

For each calculated suggestion:

  1. Double calculates the target monthly amount.

  2. It looks for a monthly preset or item within 10% of that amount.

  3. If a relevant preset is available, Double uses it.

  4. If no relevant preset is available, Double generates a sensible, rounded amount instead.

For example:

Step

Amount

Original one-time donation

$1,000

First calculated target

$300/month

Relevant monthly preset

$300/month

Second calculated target

$210/month

Relevant monthly preset

$200/month

The donor would be offered $300 per month, $200 per month, or the option to continue with the original $1,000 one-time donation.

Using presets allows Upsell to offer amounts that already have meaning within your organization, such as a specific giving level, membership tier, or funded need.

Configuring your presets

To get the best results from Upsell, configure your one-time and monthly donation presets intentionally.

Consider the relationship between your common one-time amounts and the corresponding monthly presets. With the default calculation, the two monthly suggestions will generally be close to:

  • 30% of the original one-time amount

  • 21% of the original one-time amount

For example, a $1,000 one-time donation produces target areas of approximately $300 and $210 per month.

We recommend testing Upsell with your most common one-time donation amounts. This helps ensure that donors see meaningful monthly presets instead of automatically generated amounts.
