Connecting AI assistants to Double

Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Grok to ask questions, analyze your Double data, and prepare reports and exports.

In this article, we’ll explain how to connect ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Grok to Double using AI Connectors.

Once connected, you can ask your assistant questions about your Double data, explore fundraising results, find specific information, and request reports or exports—all through a conversation. The tasks it can complete depend on the tools available through the connection and the assistant’s capabilities.

Getting your Double connection URL

  1. Open Settings in your Double dashboard.

  2. Select Integrations.

  3. Find AI Connectors and click Set up.

  4. Under Connect an AI assistant, copy the Connection URL.

Use this URL when your assistant asks for a server URL or MCP server URL:

https://api.double.giving/mcp/org

MCP is the connection standard that lets your AI assistant work with Double. You don’t need to write code to follow the setup steps below.

Before you begin, make sure you can sign in to Double and that your AI account allows custom connections. On a managed workspace, your administrator may need to enable or add the connection first. Menu labels and availability can vary by plan and product version.

Connecting ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web and go to Plugins.

  2. Select the + button, then Add custom MCP server.

  3. Enter Double as the name. Under Connection, paste your Double Connection URL into Server URL.

  4. Choose OAuth for authentication and follow the setup prompts.

  5. Review the notice, select I understand and want to continue, then click Create as a plugin.

  6. Install the resulting Double plugin and complete the Double sign-in and access approval when prompted.

  7. Start a conversation, type @, and select Double to use the connection.

If your workspace doesn’t allow custom MCP servers, contact your ChatGPT administrator. See OpenAI’s custom MCP server guide for the current setup options.

Connecting Claude

Custom connectors are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Free allows one custom connector.

For an individual account:

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.

  2. Choose + Add → Add custom connector.

  3. Name it Double, paste your Double Connection URL, and click Continue.

  4. Review the detected authentication settings and continue. Choose Sign in now and review the OAuth client settings shown.

  5. Click Add. Sign in to Double and approve access when prompted. If a Connect button appears, use it to authenticate.

  6. In your chat, open + → Connectors and enable Double.

Team and Enterprise: An Owner or Primary Owner first adds Double through Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web. Enterprise also permits custom roles with Manage access to Libraries. Members then open Customize → Connectors and click Connect.

If OAuth client details are required, contact Double support for the appropriate configuration. See Claude’s custom connector guide.

Connecting Gemini

These steps apply to Gemini Apps at gemini.google.com. A personal Google Account can also have a paid subscription, such as Google AI Pro. Account type and subscription tier are separate.

Google currently requires a personal account, age 18+, a US location, English, and Keep Activity enabled for custom apps. This Gemini Apps feature is unavailable to work or school accounts. Google’s custom apps requirements do not list a paid subscription as a prerequisite.

Using Gemini Enterprise – Business edition? It has a separate administrator-managed MCP setup with OAuth configuration. The steps below do not cover that product. See Google’s Enterprise MCP guide and contact Double support to confirm compatibility and the required connection details.

  1. Open Gemini on the web.

  2. Open Settings → Connected Apps.

  3. Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app or use the field for adding a custom app link.

  4. Paste your Double Connection URL and click Next.

  5. Follow the prompts to sign in to Double and approve access.

  6. Return to Gemini, type @, and select Double before entering your question or task.

Add the connection on the web first. After setup, Google makes connected custom apps available on both the Gemini web and mobile apps.

Connecting Perplexity

Custom remote connectors are available on Perplexity Pro, Max, and Enterprise. Your organization’s administrator may control whether you can add them.

  1. Open Plugins in the Perplexity sidebar. If you don’t see it, open Customize → Connectors.

  2. Select Add custom → Connector → Add MCP connector, then choose Remote.

  3. Enter Double as the name and paste your Double Connection URL into MCP Server URL.

  4. Select OAuth for authentication.

  5. Review the acknowledgement and click Add.

  6. Open the Double connector card to authenticate. Sign in to Double and approve access.

  7. Start a conversation or Computer task and ask Perplexity to use Double.

See Perplexity’s custom remote connector guide for current setup and organization options.

For an organization-wide connector, an administrator uses Enterprise settings → Permissions → Connectors permissions → + Custom connector. The administrator must share the connector from that permissions screen before other members can access it.

Connecting Grok

Grok’s documentation makes connectors available to all Grok users. Business and Enterprise accounts require an administrator to add the connector first.

For an individual account:

  1. Sign in and open Grok’s Connectors page.

  2. Click New Connector → Custom.

  3. Paste your Double Connection URL as the MCP server URL. If asked for a name, enter Double.

  4. Complete the authentication prompts, sign in to Double, and approve access.

  5. Start a conversation and ask Grok to use Double. Follow the connection check below to confirm it can access your campaigns.

For Grok Business or Enterprise:

  1. An administrator with Team Read-Write permissions signs in to the xAI console, selects the team, and opens Grok Business → Connectors.

  2. Choose + Add Connector → Other, enter the Double Connection URL, and complete the authentication setup.

  3. Team members then open Grok’s Connectors page and connect their own Double accounts.

Checking your connection

Return to Settings → Integrations → AI Connectors in Double. After you approve access, your assistant appears in the connected assistants list.

To test it, select or enable Double in your assistant and ask:

“Use Double to list my campaigns.”

If the assistant asks to use the connection, review and approve the request. Confirm that the response includes the campaigns you expect.

Asking questions and requesting reports

Tell your assistant what you want to know or produce. Include the campaign, date range, filters, and output format where relevant. For example:

  • “Use Double to summarize donations to our annual campaign last month, grouped by week.”

  • “Find the Double campaign named ‘Annual Appeal’ and show me its details.”

  • “Prepare a report comparing donations across our campaigns for the last quarter.”

  • “Create a CSV export of donations to our annual campaign from October 1 through October 31, with the donation date, amount, currency, and status.”

These are example requests. Available fields, actions, and file formats depend on the connection and your assistant. Ask it to explain any missing data or unsupported requests, and review the results before sharing or using them.

Managing or disconnecting an assistant

Open Settings → Integrations → AI Connectors to see your connected assistants. An Expires label shows the connection’s expiration date where available.

To disconnect an assistant, click Revoke access next to it and complete any confirmation shown. To use it again, reconnect through the assistant and approve access in Double.

Troubleshooting

  • The custom connection option is missing: Check your assistant’s account requirements and workspace permissions. For Gemini Apps, also check the region, account type, language, and Keep Activity requirements above.

  • The connection won’t finish: Copy the full Connection URL from your Double dashboard again and complete the sign-in and approval flow. If you are asked for OAuth client credentials, a client registration method, or transport details that you do not have, contact Double support for the correct configuration.

  • Double still shows “No connected assistants”: Confirm that you approved access, then refresh the AI Connectors page.

  • The assistant doesn’t use your Double data: Enable or select Double for the conversation and explicitly ask it to use Double.

  • A previously working connection stops: Check whether access has expired or been revoked, then reconnect if needed.

If you still need help, contact Double support with the assistant’s name, the step where you got stuck, and the error message or a screenshot.
